Thomas:

No. It is in their essence, even in ethics. The essence of Christian ethics is agape, charity. The essence of Buddhist ethics is karuna, compassion. They’re not the same. Charity is an act of reason and will. Compassion is a feeling.

Bea:

But they’re compatible. Compassionate feelings don’t impede deliberate charity; they’re powerful aids to it.

Thomas:

But Buddhist “compassion” goes out to everything equally and nonjudgmentally, even animals, which Christian “charity” doesn’t. Remember the story of the two Buddhist monks fishing? They were holding their lines low to the ground, and the enlightened monk got bit by a poisonous lizard. And he held his hand out to the lizard so that it could bite him again. The unenlightened monk said, “Don’t you know that lizard is poisonous?” And the enlightened monk answered, “Don’t you know that lizard is me?”
